| Dive Description | |
| Western Dry Rocks is an excellent combination diving / snorkeling trip, due to its variable depths. Divers will find excellent visibiltiy and coral formations at 50 to 60 feet, with small caves and ledges even deeper, while snorklers will find shallow undercuts and ledges with spiny and Spanish lobster, reef fish, and grunts hiding therein. It is the last of the reefs Westward until the Tortugas to be shallow enough to sustain elkhorn and staghorn coral. 300 year old star corals stand grandfatherly watch, though their calcium carbonate bases have been eroded and their surfaces are pocked with boring sponges and christmas tree worms. Shark are known to patrol these waters, particularly the black tips, bull sharks, lemon sharks, and an occasional hammerhead shark. While they are nothing for the prudent diver to fear, upon seeing one of these bad-asses, divers should immediately terminate any spearhunting or lobster collecting. If you have a full gamebag, the smart diver will drop it. Losing a chunk of your thigh will certainly ruin your divetrip, and possibly your life. |
